What is a Comprehensive University?

With the completion of the higher education mergers in 2005, there are now three types of higher education institutions:

  • Traditional Universities;
  • Universities of Technology (former Technikons); and
  • Comprehensive Universities (mergers involving Universities and former Technikons)

A comprehensive university therefore offers both traditional university programmes as well as career-oriented, former "technikon-type" programmes.
