TAKING
GOVERNMENT TO THE PEOPLE…
National Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Malusi Gigaba,
visited the WSU main campus in Mthatha on Friday, 10
February 2006, and addressed staff, students and
the public on the services and strategies of the Department
of Home Affairs.
The visit was part
of the Ministry’s campaign to make the services of the
Department of Home Affairs more accessible to the public.
The Deputy Minister was hosted by the Interim Pro Vice-Chancellor
Academic, Prof Themba Mjoli, and the campus’s Student
Representative Council. Formerly, Minister Gigaba led the
ANC Youth League.

WSU Potsdam Campus Health
Services win a floating trophy for participating in a
Health Promotion Poster Competition in January 2006.
Annually South African
Association of Campus Health Services (SAACHS) holds a Conference
for the benefit of the Campus Communities. This is a health promotion
strategy to improve healthy lifestyle in all tertiary education
institutions in South Africa.
Thanks to the results of dedicated team work, the
Campus Health Service staff (Right: visiting doctor, nurses, lay
counsellors and receptionist) and Art school lecturers and students
proudly presented their poster - based on the theme:
" Hand Hygiene and prevention of infections."

Prof Nicky Morgan and Pro

The evening
address was well received by the students. The ANC Deputy President
also addressed a public rally in Mthatha the next day. |

WSU was the venue for the
first
Oliver Tambo Memorial Lecture
in Mthatha on 8 October 2005,
in commemoration of Oliver Tambo month. Seen with Prof Morgan (right)
are the Mayor of the Ekurhuleni District (Gauteng), His Worship
Dumo Nkosi, and Mayor of the
O R Tambo District (Mthatha), Her Worship Zoleka Capa.
The lecture
was co-hosted by both municipalities and celebrated the life, contribution
and leadership of former ANC President, Oliver Tambo. |

Achiever) and Dr Archie Nkonyeni (Business Achiever).
The event, which was
held at the WSU main campus in Mthatha on 1 October 2005,
was dotted with members of the University's Convocation, namely
Chairperson of the Awards, Dr Brigalia Bam, and Patron of the
Awards, Dr Laura Mpahlwa.

Family Medicine
Conference
co-ordinator,
Anle Odendall, turned out in style for the conference culutural
evening at the WSU Great Hall in Mthatha,
7 August 2005.

The Annual Family
Medicine Conference took place in Mthatha, 5-7
August 2005, in conjunction with the Faculty of Health
Sciences and family practitioners in the city. The theme of this
year's conference was: Managing Change in Family Practice. The
conference was well attended by academics and practitioners from
around the country. It was opened by the MEC for Health, Dr Bevan
Goqwana.

Mthatha campus Merger Manager,
Mr Phumzile Mfazwe (left), looks on as Prof Kaya Mfenyana presents
a certificate of appreciation to the Mthatha merger officer's administrator,
Mrs Ernestine Thurstorn. The merger office presented certificates
of appreciation to all Task Team co-ordinators and merger office
staff from the campus at a cocktail event after the merger in July.
The event was intended to thank the co-ordinators for their contribution
in the pre-merger process. |
