KNOW YOUR ROLE AS A WSU ALUMNUS

Director of Institutional Advancement, Silvanus Welcome is all about good deeds and the improvement of the University.

Born and raised in Port Alfred, and becoming the first coloured head boy in his high school, Welcome said the foundation for his passion for Advancement started when he served as SRC Vice president and assisted with organising events for the Department of Development and Alumni at Rhodes University where he obtained his qualification in Bachelor of Social Science.

He said he has always been interested in helping others and has high hopes for the institution and plans on engaging with past students of the university known as alumni.

“The plan is to engage with alumni and get their stories and try to get them involved with the university,” said Welcome.

He further explained that the plan is not necessarily to get alumnus to donate money to the University but to get them involved with the university by donating their time and availing themselves where they can.

He believes that there is a WSU student out there that is doing well, who was once a struggling student and believes that those students can make a difference by getting involved with the university.

Welcome said the alumni is important because “alumnus are the ambassadors of the university, they need to go out there and fly the WSU flag very high and be proud to say, I am a proud WSU graduate”.

He further said Alumnus need to go out there and open doors for the university and become change agents of the university.

Welcome hopes to achieve a well-established WSU brand, reputation, and university organisational goals, for WSU to be known as a world class learning organisation and to achieve financial sustainability in the long run.
