STUDENT BAGS 5TH TITLE AS MISS WSU 2018

Walter Sisulu University second year management student, Sinazo Mbekeni (20) started modelling in high school and has since won five titles, including Miss WSU 2018.

Mbekeni said she has always wanted to model seriously but didn’t know the proper channels to follow until she started participating in various pageants hosted by WSU.

“I’ve always wanted to be a model, but I just didn’t know how to kick-start my modelling journey so when I was doing my first year I decided to enter into the Ms Freshet competition where I was crowned first princess,” said Mbekeni.

Since the Ms Freshett pageant, Mbekeni grew in her modelling and became bolder by entering the different pageants hosted by WSU of which she holds titles for, Miss WSU All Blacks 2018, Miss Butterworth 2017, Miss SASCO 2017 and her recent title Miss WSU 2018.

Mbekeni said she believes modelling is not just about looking pretty but also about getting involved in your community by donating your time to worthy causes. She said she couldn’t believe it when her name was called out as Miss WSU 2018 because of how tough the competition was.

“I was in total disbelief when they announced that I had won because my opponent was also very good and I was convinced that she’d be the one to win the pageant but that was not the case,” said Mbekeni.

She said she has had the best support from her mother who has supported her both academically and with her modelling aspirations.

Mbekeni said she took part in the Miss WSU competition in order to prepare herself for a future in modelling as she plans to enter for Miss South Africa in the near future. She has also been preparing herself by entering national pageants, one such pageant was Miss Eagle South Africa, of which she only succeeded until the semi-finals.

“In the next two years I see myself as the next Miss South Africa and I believe that the pageants I’ve been involved in and those that I will take part in will be the building blocks for the Miss South Africa competition,” said Mbekeni.

Mbekeni said she hopes to also pursue studies in Public Relations in the near future, after she completes her national diploma in management.
