BACHELOR OF COMMERCE HONOURS (BUSINESS MANAGEMENT)

Overall Purpose of the Qualification
It prepares learners for a career in Management, Marketing, Finance, Research, Human Resources, Entrepreneurship and any other related business function by equipping them with advanced skills in Business Management and enabling them to conduct basic research.
Entrance Requirements
Students who register for this programme must have B Com Degree majoring in Business Management from WSU or any other recognised institution. Ideally students should have an average of at least 60% in Business Management III.
Alternatively, students with less than 60% may be required to undertake a project before commencing with the programme. This requirement will be left to the discretion of the Department.
International students who have completed Business Management 3 (with relevant \course outlines) will be accepted to the programme. Students who do not have Business Management 3 will be able to complete it at WSU before registering for the Honours programme.
Underpinning knowledge
Students must have a good knowledge of business related disciplines, e.g. Business Management, Economics, Accounting, Statistics, and Information Systems at the undergraduate level. Also required are good language and numeracy skills.
Entry Points
B Com Degree from any recognised institution.
Exit Points
An Honours degree after having completed the programme and having obtained 126 credits.
Exit Level Outcomes
After completion of the programme, a learner will be able to practise as a Functional or a General Manager in specialist areas undertaken for the degree. They will gain managerial and leadership skills and be able to conduct primary research independently. They will also be empowered in decision-making and problem-solving skills.

Not more than 50% of subjects in the Honours Programme will be exempted in this way. See also General prospectus Rule

Career opportunities
On successful completion, students will be able to pursue careers as Managers in any of the functional areas chosen by students. Education students (educators) will be able to pursue careers as subject advisors in the Economic and Management Sciences.

Integrated Assessment
On-going assessment will be conducted by means of assignments, tests, seminar presentation and projects.
Articulation
Qualifying students will be able to proceed to a Masters level at Walter Sisulu University or at any other accredited higher learning institution.
Criteria for the Registration of Assessors
All assessors must be in possession of at least a Master’s degree and preferably also be registered with relevant professional bodies.
Moderation
External examiners who are experts in their field will be appointed.
Promotion Rules
Please see the Faculty Prospectus in your year of registration for the required number of credits.
Completion
All courses and modules must be completed with a minimum mark of 50% each. Students who obtains an average of 75% for the entire programme may graduate with a Distinction.
Exclusion
Students who do not pass a single course in a year will be excluded. Students who do not complete the programme within the prescribed times set out in the Prospectus, will also be excluded. Full-time students are allowed an additional two years to complete the degree and part-time students are allowed three additional years.
