PROGRAMMES IN THE DEPARTMENT: ECONOMICS & FINANCE

DIPLOMA IN ACCOUNTANCY

Purpose of the Qualification

  • The purpose of this qualification is to provide learners with the requisite skills and understanding of the underlying concepts in the field of accountancy and management.
  • Qualifying learners will be practising as Accountants, Auditors, Internal Auditors, Tax Practitioners, Management Accountants and Finance Consultants.
  • This qualification provides a well-rounded, technically focused education that equips learners with the technical knowledge, proficiency and pervasive skills which will enable them to demonstrate initiative and responsibility and which will enable the development of practical and operational focused qualities.
  • The qualification provides accountancy knowledge and skills to ensure competency in performing reporting functions, rendering taxation services, management advisory services on an accounting technician level and converting this embedded knowledge practically into an accounting software qualification.
  • The qualification is in line with the requirements of the various professional bodies and learners will be able to use this qualification to enter the next level of the education qualification, as a professional accountant affiliated with various accounting bodies.
  • It imparts learners with sufficient depth of knowledge and skills that promote intellectual growth and lifelong learning that will lead to further studies in the various fields of Accountancy.

Rules and Regulations

  • The possession of a National Senior Certificate (NSC) or its equivalent shall serve as the minimum admission requirement at year one level in all programmes offered by the Department of Economics and Finance.

Entrance Requirements

Senior Certificate

A National Senior Certificate and pass with English, Mathematics, Accounting, Economics or Business Studies with an achievement rating of level 3 (45% - 49%) and above.

OR

  •  A National Senior Certificate and pass with English, Mathematics, Computer Application Technology, Physical Science, Life Sciences with an achievement rating of level 3 (45% - 49%) and above.
  • Alternatively, a Higher or Advanced Certificate in the cognate field.  
  • National Certificate (Vocational) – NC (V): National Certificate Vocational Level 4
  • Pass all 3 Fundamental subjects with 50% and above (English, Life Orientation and Mathematics) and pass with 60% and above in 3 of the Vocational subjects: Applied Accounting, Economic Environment and Financial Management.

In addition to the above, the minimum Admission Point Score (APS) for admission is 25 for seven subjects.


DIPLOMA IN INTERNAL AUDITING (EXTENDED PROGRAMME) 

Purpose of the Qualification

  • The purpose of this qualification is to equip learners with knowledge and skills that will enable them to operate effectively in internal auditing and prepare them to advance their career in this field.

Rules and Regulations

  • The possession of a National Senior Certificate (NSC) or its equivalent shall serve as the minimum admission requirement at year one level in all programmes offered by the Department of Economics and Finance.

Entrance Requirements

A National Senior Certificate and pass with English, Mathematics, Accounting, Economics or Business Studies with an achievement rating of level 3 (40% - 44%) and above.

OR

  • A National Senior Certificate and pass with English, Mathematics, Computer Application Technology, Physical Science, Life Sciences with an achievement rating of level 3 (40% - 44%) and above.
  • Students with a score of 5 and above for Mathematical Literacy will also be considered.
  • National Certificate (Vocational) – NC (V): National Certificate Vocational Level 4
  • 40% and above pass in three (3) fundamental subjects (English, Mathematics (50% or more for Mathematics Literacy) & Life Orientation) and 40% and above pass in three (3) compulsory vocational subjects (Applied Accounting, Economic Environment & Financial Management).

In addition to the above, the minimum Admission Point Score (APS) for admission is 21 for seven subjects.

   Duration

  • 4 years

DIPLOMA IN INTERNAL AUDITING

Purpose of the Qualification

  • The purpose of this qualification is to equip learners with knowledge and skills that will enable them to operate effectively in internal auditing and prepare them to advance their career in this field.

Rules and Regulations

  • The possession of a National Senior Certificate (NSC) or its equivalent shall serve as the minimum admission requirement at year one level in all programmes offered by the Department of Economics and Finance.

ADVANCED DIPLOMA IN INTERNAL AUDITING

Purpose of the Qualification

  • The purpose of this qualification is to provide a well-rounded, technically focused education that equips relevant diploma graduates with the technical knowledge, proficiency and pervasive skills which will enable them to demonstrate initiative and responsibility and which will enable the development of practical and operational focused qualities.
  • The Advanced Diploma in Internal Auditing degree graduate is able to seek employment in the auditing field both in the private and public sectors (for example, local and provincial government departments and SARS).
  • A graduate would also be equipped with the skills required to pursue entrepreneurial ventures and be a job creator (employer).
  • Alternatively, enrol for a professional qualification (that is, CIA – Certified Internal Auditors) or to do Honours or Master’s degree in Internal Auditing.
  • A graduate will be able to act initially as an audit team member and later as an audit team manager performing (manual and computerized) financial and operational audit functions.
  • This qualification takes into consideration the requirements of professional bodies such as the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) and Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA).
  • Such a programme requires a thorough grounding in the knowledge, theory, principles and skills of the profession or career concerned and the ability to apply these to professional or career contexts.
  • The qualification provides accountancy and internal auditing knowledge and skills to ensure competence in performing reporting functions, rendering internal control assessments, and management advisory services on an accounting and internal auditing middle management level and converting this embedded knowledge practically into an accounting software programme.

Rules and Regulations

  • The possession of an accounting-related Diploma with relevant majors should serve as the admission requirements for the programme offered in the Department of Economics and Finance.

Entrance Requirements

  • The minimum admission requirements for this programme is a diploma in the field of accounting or auditing with a minimum average of 60%.
  • The applicant should have done Internal Auditing 3 or Auditing 3 and Financial Accounting 3 as majors at the diploma level.
  • The applicant should have passed a relevant qualification for admission within the minimum specified time.

Duration

  • A one-year (full-time) and two-year (part-time) degree.
