DEPARTMENT OF MANAGEMENT STUDIES

DIPLOMA: PUBLIC MANAGEMENT

Rules and Regulations

The possession of a National Senior Certificate (NSC) or its equivalent shall serve as the general admission requirement in this programme.

Entrance Requirements

Senior Certificate Requirement

Applicants with SC (Old Senior Certificate) must meet the requirements set out in this prospectus. They should have passed English HG-E or SG-D, Any other four subjects: Economics HG- E, Business Economics HG- E, Accounting HG – E, Physical Science HG – E, and Geography HG – E.

National Senior Certificate

Applicants with a National Senior Certificate (NSC) must meet the requirements set out in this prospectus. They should have 3 (40-49%) English and 3 (40-49%) in other FOUR subjects: Physical Science, Life Science, Business Studies, Economics, Geography, History

National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4

Applicants with a National Certificate (Vocational-Level 4) must meet the requirements set out in this prospectus. Pass all 3 Fundamental subjects with 50% and above (English, Life Orientation and Mathematics). Pass with 60% and above in 3 of the Vocational subjects: Business Practice, Office Data Processing, Office Practice, Financial Management, Management Practice, Operations Management, Project Management.

Duration

A three-year diploma.

ADVANCED DIPLOMA: PUBLIC MANAGEMENT

Rules and Regulations

The possession of a National Diploma in Public Management and Local Government Finance and any equivalent with relevant subjects shall serve as the general admission requirement in this programme.

Entrance Requirements

A prospective learner must be in possession of a relevant diploma with a 60% average mark of the overall diploma subjects to enrol for the Advanced Diploma Public Management.

Duration
One year full-time

DIPLOMA: HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Rules and Regulations

The possession of a National Senior Certificate (NSC) or its equivalent shall serve as the general admission requirement in this programme.

Entrance Requirements

Senior Certificate Requirement

Applicants with SC (Old Senior Certificate) must meet the requirements set out in this prospectus. They should have passed English HG-E or SG-D, Any other four subjects:

Economics HG- E, Business Economics HG- E, Accounting HG – E, Physical Science HG – E, and Geography HG – E.

National Senior Certificate

Applicants with a National Senior Certificate (NSC) must meet the requirements set out in this prospectus. They should have an achievement rating of at least 3 (40-49%) in the following subjects: English, Business Studies and Accounting. National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4: Applicants with a National Certificate (Vocational-Level4) must meet the requirements set out in this prospectus. Pass all 3 Fundamental subjects with 50% and above (English, Life Orientation and Mathematics). Pass with 60% in three relevant compulsory vocational subjects (Business Practice, Office Data Processing, Office Practice, Financial Management, Management Practice, Operations Management, and Project Management.

Duration

3 years mainstream and 4 years extended curriculum.

ADVANCED DIPLOMA: HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Rules and Regulations

A diploma in Human Resources Management with 360 credits shall be recognised as a general entry requirement for this programme.

Entrance Requirements

A prospective learner must be in possession of a relevant diploma with of 60% average mark of the relevant major subjects to enrol for the Advanced Diploma Human Resources Management.

Duration

One year full-time

DIPLOMA: LOCAL GOVERNMENT FINANCE (& EXTENDED PROGRAMME)

Overall Purpose of the Qualification

Municipalities across the country are actively enhancing their financial management capacity to ensure they comply with legal requirements for their budgeting and spending. This diploma is aimed at assisting people working as municipal finance officers to improve their qualifications and career prospects.

The possession of a National Senior Certificate (NSC) or its equivalent shall serve as the general admission requirement for this programme.

Entrance Requirements

Senior Certificate (Old)
English HG-E or SG-D, Mathematics HG-E or SG-D or Accounting HG-E.

National Senior Certificate

Applicants with a National Senior Certificate (NSC) must meet the requirements set out in this prospectus. They should have at least 3 (40-49%) in the following subjects:

Option 1: 3 (40-49%) English, Accounting OR Mathematics AND 3(40- 49) in other two subjects: Physical Science, Life science, Business Studies, Economics, Geography, and History.

Option 2: 3 (40- 49%) English, 4 (50-59%) Mathematics Literacy, 3 (40- 49%) Accounting AND 3(40- 49) in other two subjects: Physical Science, Life science, Business Studies, Economics, Geography, and History.

National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4

Pass all 3 Fundamental subjects with 50% and above (English, Life Orientation and Mathematics). Pass with 60% and above in 3 of the Vocational subjects: Business Practice, Office Data Processing, Office Practice, Financial Management, Management Practice, Operations Management, Project Management.

Duration

A three-year diploma for mainstream and four years for the extended programme.

BACHELOR OF COMMERCE (GENERAL)

Purpose

  • The overall purpose of the qualification is to prepare the students for a general introduction to the world of commerce and business by equipping them with basic business skills to manage a business or start a new business.

Minimum Entry Requirements

  • Minimum statutory NSC requirements for degree entry must be met, that is, an NSC with an achievement rating of 4 (50– 59 %) or better in four subjects chosen from the designated list.
  • To register for the BCom (General) degree a student needs an Admission Point Score (APS) of 28 as well as the NSC with an achievement rating of 4 (50-59 %) in Mathematics and an achievement rating of 3 (40– 49%) or better in English.
  • COMPULSORY NSC SUBJECTS: Mathematics (50-59%), English (40-49%)
  • Applicants with a National Certificate (Vocational Level-4) must meet the requirements set out in this prospectus as well obtain 60% or more for Mathematics or for Mathematics Literacy.
  • Students with a relevant Diploma from any University may be accepted. The Mathematics requirement applies.

Underpinning knowledge

  • Students must have a knowledge of business-related disciplines, for example, Business Studies, Economics, Accounting and Mathematics.
  • Also required are good language and numeracy skills.

BACHELOR OF COMMERCE (HONS) (BUSINESS MANAGEMENT)

Overall Purpose of the Qualification

  • It prepares learners for a career in Management, Marketing, Finance, Research, Human Resources, Entrepreneurship and any other related business function by equipping them with advanced skills in Business Management and enabling them to conduct basic research.

Entrance Requirements

  • Students who register for this programme must have a BCom degree majoring in Business Management from WSU or any other recognised institution. Ideally, students should have an average of at least 60% in Business Management III.
  • Alternatively, students with less than 60% may be required to undertake a project before commencing with the programme.
  • This requirement will be left to the discretion of the Department.
  • International students who have completed Business Management 3 (with relevant/course outlines) will be accepted to the programme.
  • Students who do not have Business Management 3 will be able to complete it at WSU before registering for the Honours programme.

Underpinning knowledge

  • Students must have a good knowledge of business-related disciplines, e.g. Business Management, Economics, Accounting, Statistics, and Information Systems at the undergraduate level.
  • Also required are good language and numeracy skills.
  • Entry Points BCom degree from any recognised institution.
