Faculty of Natural Sciences


The Faculty of Natural Sciences is located at the Mthatha Campus at WSU but currently offers its programs from two delivery sites: Mthatha and Buffalo City.

FACULTY OF NATURAL SCIENCES


The faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is located at the Nelson Mandela Drive Campus, Mthatha. The new medical school faculty and administrative buildings are at Sissons Street, Fort Gale (next to Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital). The faculty is comprised of the School of Medicine with 11 academic departments as well as the departments of Nursing, Public Health and Rehabilitation Medicine. The faculty offers six undergraduate programs in the following categories: Bachelor of Health Sciences in Medical Orthotics and Prosthetics, Bachelor of Medical Sciences, Bachelor of Medicine in Clinical Practise, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor of Science in Health Promotion. Graduate opportunities in the health sector exist both in public and private sectors including medical orthotics and prosthetics practitioner, clinician scientists in physiological sciences and biochemistry, clinical associate, medical practitioner, professional nurse and health promotion practitioners. Broadly, the subject combination should include a Home Language, English, Mathematics, Life Sciences and Physical Sciences

This programme provides advanced knowledge in Chemical Pathology to assist in the management and supervised research and to facilitate the learning of others in the Chemical Pathology field. The qualification is a bridge between the basic and the clinical medical sciences.

Postgraduate Diploma in Health Promotion

The programme aims at equipping students with scholarly principles and the processes of planning, implementing and evaluating health promotion programs in various settings using technology-infused approaches in response to community needs by critically examining the impact of contemporary issues on community public health and further developing systematic skills in partnership working in various professional roles.

These are professional masters’ programmes to provide the knowledge and skills required for General Practitioners doctors to become specialists in the medical disciplines specified in the programme name.

Master of Public Health

NQF Level 8 qualification in a cognate discipline with an achievement of not less than 60% for the qualification.

The programme will train relevant health professionals to identify the risk factors for diseases, understand the disease indicators and analyse the disease burden. Training includes leadership and management skills related to disease prevention strategies, health services and system planning, healthcare services delivery, management and evaluation of health services and systems, and proposing effective intervention programmes to a public health problem.
