The purpose of this qualification is to provide BSc Honours (Zoology) graduates with: • specialised knowledge, research techniques and applied competence in the field of zoology or animal biology that will further develop them to be recognized natural scientists, academics and/or researchers working in research institutions, institutions of higher learning, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and in related fields locally and abroad. • principles and practical skills for sustainable management and conservation of natural resources, which will benefit various levels of the South African communities including the private sector, governmental and non-governmental organizations. As competent conservation biologists, taxonomists, aquatic zoologists and ecologists, these graduates will develop strategies to identify and conserve biodiversity therefore alleviating poverty and mitigating against the impacts of climate change. • excellent problem solving and critical evaluation skills that can be applied to a range of biological sciences, particularly in the major catchment of student intake (Eastern Cape) where these graduates will provide solutions to socio-economic challenges faced by historically disadvantaged communities through innovative research engagement. • opportunities to network and forge partnerships with various people and organizations (through its multidisciplinary nature), a capacity building element essential for community or rural development which is an important component of the university’s vision and mission. |
Entry is by selection. A Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences/Studies/Geography or equivalent qualification and an average of 60% for third year Botany, Zoology or Environmental Sciences courses is required. Students who do not meet this requirement but interested will have to undergo a departmental assessment to establish their potential to undertake the programme. Evidence of prior learning will be assessed through the formal RPL processes where candidates are required to submit a Portfolio of Evidence (PoE) in the prescribed format. While the courses to be assessed are primarily university-based, in addition to the Matric certificate evidence from other areas of learning may be introduced if pertinent to any of the Exit Level Outcomes (ELOs) as stipulated in section 1.7 The RPL Screening Process of the WSU General Prospectus. Note: Each case will be evaluated on its own merit by the HoD in consultation with the relevant Lecturers. |
