Admission Requirements

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC RULES

10.1 General

Students should note that on registration to study at iYunivesithi Walter Sisulu, they automatically become members of the University and agree to abide by the rules and regulations of iYunivesithi Walter Sisulu as amended from time to time. Further details are available in the official prospectus.


10.2 Offering of Programmes and/or Courses Not Guaranteed

Students should note that the offering of programmes and/or courses as described in this Prospectus is not guaranteed and may be subject to change.

The offering of programmes and/or courses is dependent on:
• Viable student enrolment numbers being met (as determined by the HoD)
• Availability of physical and human resources


10.3 Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

RPL may be used to demonstrate competence for admission to programmes offered by the department.

It addresses:
• Mobility and recognition of units of learning completed at former Technical Colleges, Universities and other accredited institutions
• Experiential learning undertaken in industry

Refer to individual programme rules for details. Departments within the Faculty of Engineering and Technology have specific guidelines governing articulation and outlining RPL requirements.


10.4 Class Attendance

• Attendance of all classes, including practicals, laboratory work, tutorials and site visits is compulsory
• Students must be punctual at all times
• Lecturers will keep attendance registers as part of student assessment


10.5 Semester Tests, Practicals/Lab Work, Site Visits and Assignments

Students who:
• Miss semester tests, practicals, lab work, site visits, or
• Fail to submit assignments/projects on time

will receive a zero mark, unless:
• A valid medical certificate (submitted within 7 days) is provided

Additional rules:
• No more than one major semester assessment may be missed
• All applicable university rules and regulations apply


10.6 Course Evaluation

Students will be required to complete evaluation forms on course offerings and instructors at the end of each course.


10.7 Code of Conduct

The main focus is for students to study and learn.

Students and lecturers must:
• Be respectful to one another
• Perform their work in a diligent and responsible manner
• Encourage questions and engagement
• Be punctual in attending all classes
• Keep venues clean and tidy
• Not eat or litter in classrooms
• Take care of documentation and equipment used in class and practicals


10.8 Registration Requirements That Must Be Met

a) First-time entering students must enrol for all required courses at that level (S1/Level 1A)

b) If a student fails courses across multiple levels, they must first enrol for lower-level courses. Higher-level enrolment will only be considered if:
• Pre-requisite criteria are met
• There are no timetable clashes

c) A student will not be allowed to:
• Jump levels
• Enrol for courses at more than two levels simultaneously

d) The Head of Department may limit the number of courses a student may enrol in when poor academic progress is evident


10.9 Work Integrated Learning (WIL)

(Applicable to Diploma programmes only)

To fulfil the requirements of some Diploma programmes, a student must complete a period of experiential learning as described in the curriculum.

A module guide outlining requirements for successful completion is obtainable from the department.


10.10 Admission Rules and Credit Recognition

For Admission Rules, see the section on Admission Requirements above.

The department will consider courses completed at other tertiary institutions for exemption, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of iYunivesithi Walter Sisulu, subject to the prescribed criteria.


10.11 Applications to Study Elsewhere

If a student wishes to graduate from iYunivesithi Walter Sisulu but enrols for one or more courses at another university, a written application must be submitted (through the HoD) before registration at the other institution.

Students must note:
• Not more than 50% of the courses in the qualification will be exempted
• All exit-level courses must be completed at iYunivesithi Walter Sisulu, unless otherwise approved by Senate

Any provisional approval is subject to final approval by Senate.

10.12 Non-Degree/Diploma Enrolment

Applications for students wishing to enrol for courses that do not lead to a qualification will only be considered after accommodating degree/diploma students and are subject to available space.


10.13 Recognition of Credits (Transfer Students)

Students from other higher education institutions:
• Must apply for recognition of credits at registration
• Must submit completed forms and course syllabi

Approval is subject to Senate.

Deadlines:
• End of January (May graduation)
• End of April (September graduation)

Failure to comply may result in:
• Non-processing of applications
• Automatic de-registration

10.14 Code of Conduct in Practical Facilities and Uniforms

General:

• Strict adherence to instructions from staff is required

Uniforms:

• Students must follow prescribed dress codes
• Non-compliance will result in denied access

Health and Safety:

• Students must comply with all health and safety regulations (on campus and during WIL)
• Non-compliance will be treated as a disciplinary offence


10.15 Plagiarism

iYunivesithi Walter Sisulu does not tolerate plagiarism.

Plagiarism is the practice of taking someone else’s work or ideas and presenting them as one’s own.

Consequences:
• A zero mark for the task
• Possible disciplinary action
