Department Overview (HOD). Department of Civil Engineering
Professor Akinola Ikudayisi
Welcome to the Department of Civil Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology at Walter Sisulu University. Our department operates across both the Buffalo City and Butterworth Campuses, ensuring that students have access to quality education and resources regardless of their location.
Civil Engineering at WSU is a multidisciplinary field that prepares graduates to become skilled technicians and technologists capable of planning, designing, constructing, and maintaining essential infrastructure systems such as roads, bridges, buildings, and water supply networks. Our programmes foster analytical and problem-solving skills, enabling graduates to address engineering challenges that impact communities locally and beyond.
We are committed to academic excellence, innovative teaching, and cultivating a supportive learning environment where students can thrive. Guided by the University’s vision “To be technologically infused,” we employ modern engineering tools and technologies to ensure our students achieve the Graduate Attributes (GAs) required by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
All our Diploma programmes are vocationally oriented, emphasizing practical engineering competencies. They are fully aligned with the Higher Education Qualifications Sub-Framework (HEQSF) and accredited by ECSA. As such, our graduates are well-positioned to pursue careers in consulting firms, construction companies, and various public and private sector organisations within the civil engineering field.
We look forward to supporting you throughout your academic journey. On behalf of the department, we wish you a rewarding and successful experience in your studies.
