Department Overview (HOD) - Arts

Professor Enongene Sone

Welcome to the Department of Arts within the Faculty of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences at Walter Sisulu. Our department is committed to cultivating critical thinkers, creative practitioners, and socially responsive graduates who are equipped to contribute meaningfully to both local and global contexts.

Our Bachelor of Arts (BA) programme provides a strong and flexible foundation in the humanities. Students are afforded the opportunity to explore three subjects in their first year before progressing to two majors in their second and third years, ensuring both breadth and depth of knowledge. The structure of the degree enables students to build coherent academic pathways, with majors that are carefully scaffolded from first-year level through to advanced study. This foundational training prepares students for a wide range of professional fields, including media, education, heritage, and the creative industries.

Admission into the BA programme is guided by clear academic criteria, including a Bachelor’s endorsement with the National Senior Certificate, a minimum APS of 27, and demonstrated competence in relevant humanities or teaching subjects. For students wishing to major in English, a higher level of proficiency is required to ensure academic success and engagement.

At postgraduate level, the BA Honours programme offers students the opportunity to specialise in disciplines such as Afrikaans, English, IsiXhosa, History, and Sesotho. This level deepens undergraduate knowledge through focused study and the introduction of research methodologies. Students are expected to engage critically with diverse knowledge systems and methodological approaches, equipping them with the analytical tools required for advanced scholarship and professional practice.

The Master of Arts (MA) programme represents a significant step into independent research and academic development. It provides students with the opportunity to deepen both theoretical and practical knowledge within their chosen discipline. The MA is designed to prepare graduates for careers in academia, research, and leadership roles across various sectors, while also serving as a foundation for doctoral study.

Across all levels of study, the Department of Arts remains dedicated to academic excellence, intellectual inquiry, and the nurturing of talent. Our graduates emerge as educators, researchers, writers, broadcasters, curators, and creative professionals who are capable of shaping narratives, preserving heritage, and driving innovation within society.

We invite you to join a vibrant academic community where knowledge is not only acquired but also created, challenged, and applied.
