Dr Samuel Adjei-Frimpong

Dr S Adjei-Frimpong is the HoD and Lecturer of the Department of Electrical Engineering with twenty years of experience of which ten years is at management level. He holds a PhD in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from the University of Johannesburg (UJ), Master of Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and a BSc (Hons) in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana.

At WSU, Dr. S Adjei-Frimpong contributes to the programme development and the curriculum development of modules in Electrical Machines and Power Systems at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. His research interests include designing and implementing electrical machines for renewable energy technologies.

Ms. Shanu Aziz

Ms Shanu Aziz is an accomplished academic in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Walter Sisulu University, specialising in Electronics and Electrical Engineering. She holds an MEng in Computer and Electronic Engineering from the North-West University (Potchefstroom Campus) and a BTech degree from Mahatma Gandhi University, India. She is also registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as a Candidate Engineer.

At Walter Sisulu University, Ms Aziz plays a key role in Teaching and Learning, particularly in curriculum innovation. She is actively involved in the design and development of the new B Eng Tech programme, ensuring alignment with ECSA standards and emerging industry needs. Her commitment to enhancing student learning has earned her notable institutional recognitions, including the Best Presenter Award at the WSU Learning and Teaching Recognition Awards Day (2022) and the Grassroots Event (2021).

Ms Aziz also contributes significantly to Community Engagement initiatives. Her collaboration with The Cortex Hub has created pathways for students to engage with emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, strengthening the link between academic preparation and industry readiness.

As an emerging researcher with national and international visibility, Ms Aziz has presented her work on signal processing, compressive sampling, cognitive radio, and smart grid technologies at various conferences. Her early research received international recognition through the Interscience Young Investigator Award (2012). Prior to joining WSU, she gained academic experience as a Temporary Lecturer at the University of Johannesburg and as a Research Assistant at North-West University.

Dr Phumzile Malindi

Dr P Malindi is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Electrical Engineering. He has 7 years of industrial experience in telecommunications, specializing in Telematics and Transmission (Radio and Microwave), and more than 28 years in academia. He holds a Diploma in Electrical Engineering L/C., BTech in Electrical Engineering L/C., MTech in Electrical Engineering L/C., and DTech in Electrical Engineering. He is also registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as a Professional Engineering Technologist. He joined academia as a lecturer in 1996 and was promoted to senior lecturer in 2001. Within academia, Dr Malindi has held the position of Programme Coordinator (PCO) for BTech, WIL coordinator, and acting head of department (HoD). His research interests are in IoT and Smart Systems, Quality of Service (QoS), Rural Telemedicine and Telehealth, Circuits and Systems, and Antennas. Dr Malindi has authored 1 book, 1 book chapter, 3 journal articles, and 8 peer-reviewed conference articles. He has also served as a reviewer for the IEEE Computer Society (IEEE Transactions on Computers, IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems, and IEEE Transactions of Mobile Computing), and Academia (Academia Letters in the field of IoT).

Mr. Ovid Ndondo

With a strong foundation in Electrical Engineering, supported by a National Higher Diploma and an MSc in Electrical Engineering from Curtin University of Technology, I bring extensive industry and academic experience to my role. My career began at Volkswagen South Africa (VWSA), where I completed my trade as an Electronic Mechanician from 1985 to 1987. I continued to build my technical expertise as a Trainee Technician between 1988 and 1991, gaining in-service experience in key departments such as Quality and Production.

From 1991 to 1999, I advanced through various engineering roles within VWSA’s Research and Development division, progressing from Junior Engineer to Senior Engineer. In 1996, I was selected to serve as a Resident Engineer at Volkswagen AG (VWAG) in Germany and SEAT in Spain, contributing to international engineering and development projects.

Since 1999, I have been a Lecturer at the former Eastern Cape Technikon—now Walter Sisulu University (WSU)—where I continue to share my industry knowledge and support the development of future engineering professionals.

Mr Edward Kofi Appiah is an Electrical Engineering Lecturer with extensive experience in both industry and academia. His work remains grounded in practical application, professional excellence, and the advancement of engineering education.
