VETERAN JOURNALIST SETS EXAMPLE BY RETURNING TO UNIVERSITY AFTER 20 YEARS
Veteran Journalist, Mphumzi Zuzile Graduated at WSU's May Graduation

For many, 20 years in a profession is a mark of mastery, but for veteran journalist and government communicator Mphumzi Zuzile, it was also a reminder that learning never truly ends.

This May, Zuzile proudly graduated with an Advanced Diploma in Journalism from WSU, the same institution where he earned his initial journalism diploma back in 2001 as part of the university’s first journalism cohort.

Despite his extensive career spanning over two decades, Zuzile humbly admits that experience alone is not enough.

“No matter how much experience you have, no one knows everything. Studying again reminded me just how much more there is to learn especially from the younger generation,” said Zuzile.

Zuzile, who currently serves as the spokesperson for the Eastern Cape Social Development MEC, said going back to school while working a demanding job was no easy feat.

“My role requires constant travel, so I had to attend some classes while on the road. It was a real challenge juggling work and studies, but I stayed committed,” he reflected.

Zuzile said his reasons for going back to school were for his family and career advancements.

“My wife and I made the decision to return to school to set a positive example for our children. We want to model a commitment to education so that when we encourage them to pursue further studies, it is backed by our own actions. Moreover, in the public sector, having a basic education is no longer sufficient, advancing one's studies is essential for better career positioning,” said Zuzile.

What stood out most for Zuzile during his academic journey was collaborating with younger students.

“Working with them on assignments showed me how differently they approach problems. Their creativity, boldness, and use of technology opened my eyes to new ways of thinking,” he said.

While encouraging others to pursue further studies, Zuzile also stressed the equal importance of practical experience.

“Education is key for career growth, but experience in the field builds the kind of wisdom you will not find in books. You need both, they complement each other,” he added.

Zuzile concluded that returning to the classroom is more than just a personal achievement, it is a message to others that it is never too late to pursue education, regardless of how advanced one’s career may be.
