Students with Special Needs
Background
The Institutional Disability Support Services (DSS) under Inclusivity, Equity and Access in Transformation and Languages Directorate became functional in August 2023 after the employment of the Acting Manager -DSS. The main function of the unit is to advocate for the rights of the students and staff with disabilities through policy development, Teaching and Learning, psychosocial and ICT support, work with internal and external stakeholders to ensure that the students achieve academic success and staff is supported to improve production.
The Institutional Disability Support Service Unit has adopted an inclusive and human rights approach in teaching and learning. The inclusive approach in teaching and learning entails consciously creating a learning environment where all students feel appreciated and encouraged in their development, are treated fairly, and have equal access to education. Furthermore, the Unit works with the internal and external stakeholders to create an enabling environment, and reasonably accommodate the needs of the persons with disabilities in WSU.
The IDSSU seeks to increase access, equity and inclusion through transformation of structures, policies and practices within the university
