The Faculty of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences comprises 6 departments – African LanguagesArtsVisual ArtsSchool of LawSocial Sciences, as well as Social Work and Psychology.

FACULTY OF LAW, HUMANITIES & SOCIAL SCIENCES

The Faculty of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences comprises 6 departments – African Languages, Arts, Visual Arts, School of Law, Social Sciences, as well as Social Work and Psychology. Fashion is in Ibika and Buffalo City Campuses while Visual Arts is in Buffalo City. The rest of the departments, apart from Visual Art and Fashion, are in Mthatha. The faculty has over 2000 students at all levels of study – Diploma, Advanced Diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.

The faculty has 8 exciting undergraduate programmes to choose from. These are Diploma in Fashion, Diploma in Fine Arts, Advanced Diploma in Fine Art, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Laws, Bachelor of Social Science, Bachelor of Psychology, and Bachelor of Social Work. There are various graduate opportunities including but not limited to self-employment in the entertainment, employment in multiple government departments including but not limited to Arts and Culture, Correctional Services, Education, Justice, Policing, Social Development, and Tourism. There are also many employment opportunities in Civic Organisations and Non-Profit Organisations. Industries such film, advertising and banking find our graduates appropriate. Examples of specific careers include the following: fashion designers, artists or painters, educators, lecturers, researchers, and creative writers. Those who study law can, among other possibilities, take up these jobs: academic, attorney, advocate, prosecutor, arbitrator, magistrate and legal advisor.  Those who study Social Work and Psychology find work as social workers, counsellors, consultants, researchers, and academics.

MINIMUM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

      PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Advanced Diploma in Fine Art

W66003

NQF Level 6 qualification with 360 credits in a cognate discipline with an achievement of not less than 65% (average) for the programme.

(Applicants from other institutions will be required to present a portfolio of previous work.)

The purpose of this qualification is to equip students with the skills and knowledge to become professionals in the fine art industry together with the requisite entrepreneurial skills needed to succeed

Bachelor of Arts Honours

NQF Level 7 qualification in a cognate discipline with achievement not less than 60% for the majors.

Where the applicant falls slightly short of the 60% mark (by no more than 2 marks), and the department is aware of mitigating circumstances, it may motivate to SENATE that such a student be enrolled.

The honours level deepens undergraduate level by offering specialisation in a specific discipline and its research methods. The student must be able to engage many sources of knowledge and choose from a multiplicity of methodologies, the most relevant one. The knowledge gained must be at this level.

Bachelor of Social Sciences Honours

This qualification deepens undergraduate knowledge and introduces relevant research methods and problem-solving skills. It also fosters working in a multidisciplinary framework. This qualification is research-oriented and is designed to cater for a wide range of learners and professionals working in the private, public and development spheres.

Master of Arts

NQF Level 8 qualification in a cognate discipline with achievement not less than 60% for the qualification.

A Master’s degree marks the beginning proper, of a possible trajectory to academia. It is a further deepening of research methods and subject knowledge at a theoretical and also practical level, depending on the discipline and its demands.

Master of Laws

NQF Level 8 qualification in a cognate discipline with achievement not less than 60% for the qualification.

The LLM marks the beginning of further study to Doctor of Philosophy in Law or career in the legal field or in a non-law field. Judicious selection and synthesis of knowledge is key at this level of study as is a nuanced understanding of legal rules. Students are expected to successfully complete a dissertation to illustrate this competence.

Master of Social Work

NQF Level 8 qualification in a cognate discipline with achievement not less than 60% for the qualification.

(All students who meet the minimum admission requirements for the Master of Social Work programme will be required to undergo an entrance interview, which will further determine eligibility. )

This is a degree by dissertation or research. It builds on the undergraduate work by deepening theory from various disciplines such as Psychology, Education and Sociology. Theories are intervention oriented and aim to

empower those who need help so that they can solve the problems they face.
