The purpose of the diploma is to offer specialized knowledge and skills that are tailored to respond to the occupational and skills shortages in chemical and chemical-allied industries such as pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, food, mining, petrochemicals, automotive, environmental, wastewater management, pollution control, waste disposal and recycling, agriculture, research, and the health sector.

The programme aims to empower graduates with knowledge to find innovative routes to start-up businesses and develop their business ideas into opportunities that can be exploited by providing a successful product or service in the emerging economy.

The purpose of this programme is to produce diversified graduates who can contribute immediately and meaningfully to the human resource needs of the chemical and chemical-allied industries.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES:

Successful graduates from the programme can register for an advanced diploma in chemistry, which is a gateway to postgraduate qualifications such as a Postgraduate Diploma in Analytical Chemistry, a Master of Science, and doctoral qualifications.

Graduates from the programme can occupy technical positions in chemical and chemical-allied industries such as laboratory technicians, scientists, quality control managers, laboratory managers, or even start their own businesses.

QUALIFICATION NAME: Advanced Diploma in Chemistry

MINIMUM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

NQF Level 6 Qualification with 360 credits in a cognate discipline with achievement not less than 60% in the following courses:

• Analytical Chemistry III (Theory)
• Analytical Chemistry III (Practical)
• Inorganic Chemistry III
• Organic Chemistry III
• Physical Chemistry III

However, candidates with relevant one-year industrial experience and an average of at least 55% in their exit level courses will be considered for admission.

Note that admission is not automatic; candidates will be selected based on their proven academic record and/or post-qualification professional experience.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW:

The reimagined Advanced Diploma in Chemistry programme is a continuing education course designed to advance specialist skills and foster a thorough and organised comprehension of contemporary theory, practice, and techniques in analytical chemistry.

The programme advances students' knowledge of increasingly sophisticated analytical instrumental techniques and principles, allowing them to formulate, undertake, and resolve more complex theoretical and practice-related problems and tasks by selecting and applying appropriate methods and techniques.

Insufficient research skills are a major impediment to growth, development, and advancement of the chemical and chemical-allied industry in Africa. The 2020–2025 Chemical Industries Education and Training Authority (CHIETA) report indicated a lack of balance in human resource skills produced by higher education institutions. Most technical qualifications produce graduates with correct technical skills, but a lack of innovation and creativity remains a major drawback to industry growth.

As a result, the Advanced Diploma in Chemistry offers an Introduction to Research Methods in Analytical Chemistry, equipping graduates with the necessary attributes to address African industry challenges through research and innovation.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES:

Graduates of the Advanced Diploma in Chemistry may pursue postgraduate programmes, specifically the postgraduate diploma or Honours degree at NQF level 8, enabling vertical articulation.

Additionally, graduates with sufficient industrial exposure can assume technical positions such as manufacturing research chemists, chemical technologists, and quality control analysts, as well as managerial positions (pending experience).
