Rapturous applause raised the roof at the Potsdam Site Great Hall during the final session of the iYunivesithi Walter Sisulu’s Buffalo City Campus graduation ceremonies recently when Advanced Diploma in Analytical Chemistry graduate, Zamampilo Giwu, walked away with the prestigious Cum Laude distinction- the only one to do so in her class.

The significance of graduating Cum Laude, as previously explained by Walter Sisulu, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning, Prof Maggie Linnington, translates to “with praise” - a distinction awarded to students who achieve an overall average of 75%, complete their qualification within the minimum prescribed time, and do so without failing a module or sitting for supplementary examinations.

Born and raised in East London, Giwu graduated from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and was one of only 10 graduates across the entire ceremony to achieve this remarkable feat. More impressively, she was the sole graduate in her Analytical Chemistry class to do so.

At the heart of her academic excellence, she said, was an unwavering determination to build a strong foundation for a brighter future, not only for herself, but for her family as well.

“My main motivation to consistently perform at a high level comes from my love for my family and my desire to make them proud of my efforts. I also wanted to discover what I was truly capable of, and whether I could achieve greatness despite the many challenges life throws at us,” said Giwu.

Currently pursuing a Computational Chemistry Honours degree at another Eastern Cape university, Giwu speaks passionately about her fascination with science and chemistry - an interest that dates back to her days at Alphendale High School in East London.

She explained that her decision to enrol for Analytical Chemistry at Walter Sisulu stemmed largely from her love for problem-solving, research, and practical laboratory work, all foundational pillars of the discipline that deeply resonated with her.

“Analytical Chemistry stood out to me because of its importance in industries such as pharmaceuticals, environmental science, and research - fields that fascinated me from a young age,” she said.

For Giwu, being the only student in the 2026 Analytical Chemistry class to graduate Cum Laude carries profound personal and academic significance, particularly considering the sacrifices, discipline, and relentless commitment required throughout her studies.

Overcome with emotion and pride, she reflected: “The hard work I put in is an investment in my future. It’s an achievement that makes me proud and motivates me to continue striving for excellence in my future studies and career. Seeing my progress every semester encouraged me to push even harder.”

Her journey, however, was not without its challenges. Giwu revealed that balancing an intense academic workload, including laboratory reports, assignments, and tests, alongside personal responsibilities, often proved demanding.

Yet, through focus, discipline, and perseverance, she successfully navigated those obstacles.

“Even during the most difficult times, the key was consistency - staying committed to studying, revising, and attending classes regularly. I also learned the importance of time management, resting when necessary, and asking for help whenever I found myself struggling,” she said.

Among the highlights of her academic journey were laboratory practicals and research-based projects, which allowed her to transform theoretical knowledge into practical application.

She described the use of analytical instruments and the interpretation of experimental data as among the most exciting and fulfilling aspects of her studies, noting that they made the learning experience deeply impactful and meaningful.

Giwu also paid tribute to the lecturers and laboratory mentors who played an instrumental role in her academic development.

“My lecturers and lab mentors contributed immensely to my academic growth. Their guidance, patience, and willingness to assist whenever I encountered difficulties strengthened both my understanding and confidence in the field of Analytical Chemistry,” she concluded.
