MWELI MAGIC AND TSHABALALA GRIT KEEP WALTER SISULU UNBEATEN

In the rolling hills of Mdeni, on Sunday night 2 August, a village nestled in the rural heart of Qumbu, football became more than a game, but rather a celebration of belonging.

Jubilation erupted, not only inside the University Stadiumstadium, but hundreds of kilometres away as Walter Sisulu women’s football team striker, Lillitha Mweli's free-kick soared through the air before crashing into the top corner of the University of the Western Cape's net during the second round of the Varsity Sports Football tournament.  

In one local watering hole of Mdeni, voices pierced the night sky as friends and neighbours danced shoulder to shoulder, a moment captured as they jubilantly chanted, "uLilitha ngowethu" - "Lilitha is ours”.

The viral celebration was not simply about a spectacular goal, but about watching one of their own stands fearlessly against the defending Varsity Football champions from the Western Cape.

"I truly felt deeply honoured and humbled by the support my people have shown me. From the moment I left for the tournament to scoring the goal, they've been with me. Even though we drew, their happiness made me feel like we had won,” said Mweli.

For the ICT student at Walter Sisulu’s Buffalo City Campus, the strike was no accident.

Moments before the ball curled wickedly into the top left corner, a teammate's intelligent decoy run disguised her intentions, allowing Mweli to unleash the kind of free-kick she has spent countless training sessions perfecting.

It was the reward for hours of repetition, patience and belief in a craft she continues to refine.

"I love taking free-kicks. I take pride in the work I put into improving my technique because I know moments like these can decide important matches,” she said.

Although UWC eventually found an equaliser, Walter Sisulu emerged with a hard-earned 1-1 draw against the defending champion, adding to another impressive 1-1 result against last season's finalists, FNB Wits, in their opening fixture on Saturday 1 August.

And if Mweli provided the artistry, then a fellow second-year ICT student, Angel Tshabalala, embodied resilience.

The defender from kwaMhlanga in Mpumalanga was the cornerstone of Walter Sisulu's defensive resolve against Wits, producing a performance of composure, strength and relentless determination that earned her the “Player of the Match” accolade.

She pressed relentlessly, won crucial duels and repeatedly extinguished danger, even as the physical demands of the tournament forced the coaching staff to withdraw her in both matches as a precaution against injury.

Football, Tshabalala says, first captured her imagination as a teenager, stating: “I started playing when I was 14. After school, I'd rush home and go straight into the streets to play with the boys in my neighbourhood."

Those early contests shaped the toughness that now defines her game. Yet beyond the tackles and interceptions lies an unwavering commitment to the badge she wears.

Returning to Varsity Football after an eight-year absence inevitably brought nerves, but they quickly gave way to belief as Walter Sisulu matched the competition's established powers stride for stride.

"We've earned points against both of last year's finalists, and what makes me proud is that we fought for each other. Our fighting spirit carried us through difficult moments, and that's what this team is built on,” she said beaming with pride.

With two impressive draws against the competition's benchmark teams, Walter Sisulu have announced their return to the Varsity Football stage.

Led by hometown heroes whose performances have inspired communities far beyond the pitch, the team now turns its attention to the next challenge against CPUT and the University of Johannesburg at Wits University from 8–10 August.
