Success Among Funded Students

In 2023, 57.8% of graduates benefitted from bursaries, predominantly funded through the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). This crucial support enabled these students, many from households in the lowest financial quintile, to access education, overcome socioeconomic barriers, and achieve academic success. The breakdown across WSU’s campuses is as follows:

• Buffalo City: Bursary graduation rate of 57.7%, reflecting the robust support system available to students.
• Butterworth: 3% of graduates were funded, enhancing access to vital disciplines.
• Mthatha: Maintained a 54.9% bursary graduation rate, underscoring consistent student support.
• Konani: Achieved a 67.9% success rate for bursary-funded students, the highest among WSU campuses.

Gender Representation and Academic Fields

The 2023 cohort also demonstrated notable diversity in gender representation and academic disciplines. Out of 6,246 graduates, 61.9% were female, showcasing WSU's commitment to gender equity in higher education. Key highlights by field of study include:

• Business/Management: 1,640 graduates, with female students representing 81.3% and male students achieving a 64.6% success rate.
• Education: A cornerstone of WSU’s offerings, this field had 1,335 graduates, 71% of whom were female, illustrating ongoing growth in teacher education.
• Science, Engineering, and Technology: 1,705 graduates, indicating strong outcomes in STEM fields, which are critical to South Africa’s development goals.

Academic Qualification Breakdown

WSU's graduates span multiple qualification types, emphasising the university's role in producing versatile and future-ready individuals:

• Advanced Diplomas: 794 graduates, with 69.5% female representation, highlighting growth in specialised fields.
• Bachelor's Degrees (NQF 7): 539 graduates, achieving a commendable 73.7% female rate.
• Diplomas (NQF 6): 1,731 graduates, demonstrating strong representation across fields such as business, science, and education.

Residence and Graduate Success

Residence facilities played a vital role in student success, with 39.7% of 2023 graduates residing on campus. These accommodations provided a supportive environment for academic achievement, particularly for students from rural and economically challenged backgrounds.
