The Department of Electrical Engineering at Walter Sisulu University is committed to advancing its leadership in higher education, focusing on the application of technology in the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of systems within the electrical engineering industry. The department promotes excellence in both research and technological application while offering career-oriented diploma and degree programmes aligned with the standards of the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), the Council for Higher Education (CHE), and the Higher Education Quality Committee (HEQC).
Our programmes are designed to address the socio-economic needs of the Eastern Cape region and the wider sub-continent. We offer the following qualifications: a three-year Diploma in Electrical Engineering, a four-year Diploma in Electrical Engineering (Extended Programme), and a two-year Advanced Diploma in Electrical Engineering, delivered at the College Street campus. The Advanced Diploma offers specialisations in Communication Engineering and Power Engineering.
The department maintains strong partnerships with industry through its Departmental Advisory Board, which includes academic, support, and industry stakeholders. Meeting twice a year, the board provides guidance on curriculum development, assessment, vocational relevance, research priorities, professional development, and extracurricular initiatives, fostering a two-way dialogue between the University and the broader community.
All our qualifications are fully accredited by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), ensuring that our graduates are equipped with the skills, knowledge, and professional competence required for a successful career in electrical engineering.
