Faculty of Natural Sciences - Overview
Professor Albert Thembinkodi Modi
Scientific discovery, critical inquiry, and innovation form the foundation of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at iYunivesithi Walter Sisulu. The Faculty provides a stimulating academic environment where curiosity is cultivated, knowledge is advanced, and practical solutions are developed to address real-world challenges.
A broad suite of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes is offered across key scientific disciplines, with particular emphasis on mathematics and science as drivers of national development. These programmes are designed to equip students with analytical thinking, technical expertise, and problem-solving abilities that are essential in a rapidly evolving, knowledge-based economy.
Graduates emerge with the capacity to pursue diverse career paths in both the public and private sectors, while also being encouraged to explore entrepreneurial opportunities. The Faculty promotes self-reliance and innovation, supporting students to translate their knowledge into viable ventures that contribute to economic participation and job creation.
The academic structure of the Faculty is organised into four departments:
- Applied Sciences, incorporating Analytical Chemistry and Consumer Science in Food and Nutrition
- Biological and Environmental Sciences, including Botany, Geography and Environmental Sciences, Pest Management, and Zoology
- Chemical and Physical Sciences, comprising Chemistry and Physics
- Mathematical Sciences and Computing, encompassing Computer Science, Mathematics, and Statistical Sciences
Together, these departments provide an integrated and multidisciplinary approach to scientific education, ensuring both depth of knowledge and breadth of application.
The Faculty’s vision is to serve as a leading centre for science and mathematics education, developing graduates who are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and innovative capacity to contribute to sustainable development and address socio-economic challenges, including poverty alleviation.
Its mission centres on excellence in teaching, research, and innovation, with a strong focus on producing graduates who are not only competitive in the labour market but also capable of initiating and sustaining their own enterprises. Academic staff are actively engaged in research and community engagement, while also mentoring emerging scholars to ensure continuity and growth within the academic environment.
Ongoing investment in modern infrastructure and advanced teaching and research equipment supports a high-quality learning experience. The Faculty is committed to creating an environment that is professional, inclusive, and conducive to academic success, where both students and staff can thrive.
The values of honesty and integrity, quality and excellence, respect, and ubuntu guide all aspects of Faculty life, shaping a culture that prioritises accountability, collaboration, and mutual respect.
Strategically, the Faculty seeks to strengthen its position as a preferred destination for scientific studies within the Eastern Cape and beyond, expand its footprint in marine scientific research and innovation, and produce graduates who are adaptable, future-ready, and committed to excellence.
All who engage with the Faculty—whether as prospective students, current students, collaborators, or visitors—are invited to explore its academic offerings and become part of a community dedicated to advancing science in service of society.
