Department of Applied Sciences
Department overview (HOD)
Welcome to the Department of Applied Sciences! You've made a fantastic choice by selecting our programs, which are designed with a strong technical focus. By studying analytical chemistry and consumer science, you'll unlock exciting career opportunities in both technical and managerial roles within the chemical and food and beverage industries. Our curriculum also serves as a solid foundation for pursuing advanced degrees in chemistry, consumer science, chemical engineering, health, and medicine.
Our diploma in analytical chemistry equips graduates with a comprehensive understanding of key protocols in analytical laboratories, covering essential topics like sampling, sample preparation, quality assurance, and quality control. We place a strong emphasis on developing effective report writing and communication skills, ensuring that our students are well-prepared for professional environments.
The Diploma in Consumer Science (Food and Nutrition) integrates food science, food microbiology, culinary arts, and food product development. This multifaceted approach prepares students to meet the evolving demands of the modern consumer industry, particularly as lifestyles continue to change. Our goal is to cultivate food scientists who are ready to address these challenges thoughtfully and innovatively.
Our department fosters a passionate, vibrant, and energetic environment focused on preparing our students for successful professional careers after graduation. We carefully design our curricula to emphasize essential subject matter and hands-on laboratory experiences. A key priority is developing critical thinking, problem-solving, technical writing, and presentation skills in our students.
We offer personalized guidance from their first year to graduation to support our students' success. Our diverse board members bring a wealth of experience, engaging in world-class research and serving as leaders in their respective fields. Many have received prestigious awards for their scientific contributions and hold active leadership roles within faculty committees and societies.
Our departmental staff are also committed to delivering exemplary teaching, employing innovative methods such as active learning and flipped classrooms. Many have actively participated in workshops to explore and integrate new teaching strategies into their classrooms.
We believe you will discover the Department of Applied Sciences to be an inspiring, welcoming, and inclusive space. We encourage you to explore the many opportunities that await you here.
With our warmest wishes,
Professor Raymond Taziwa
